Hi. I'm trying to make translation for FTL, but special charasters for my language are displayed as codes, despite the original fonts contains this charaters.

Looking through some older italian and spanish (
here mostly, later pages) translation threads, it looks like adding accented letters was necessary, but I also read that FTL converts everything to WINDOWS-1252, which has those letters, but doesn't have what you need (ĄąĆćĘꣳŃńŚśŻżŹź).
In a russian mod, it would appear the fonts were altered to 1251 to display the desired characters, for "ĄąĆćĘꣳŃńŚśŻżŹź" you'd probably want to look into writing in
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_8859-2 (set in the text editor), and modifying the fonts (it doesn't look like there's a way around that, even though the characters exist in some of the font files - maybe they could still be used?).
I'm looking into what can be done about the fonts, but I think there were some polish translations in progress, you could look around if someone has worked on it already.

Thank you for answer. So do you mean I should save .xml files in IEC 8859-2 encoding, then check what fancy symbols will appear instead of polish characters and change this symbols in fonts to desired characters. Right?
There is no polish translation yet. In 2013 famous modding group Iron Squad promised to make it until 2015 but they never showed any progress. I can still find quite fresh posts from people asking for translation but there is no answer. Poject's forum is dead and overtaken by spam bots. Summing up, there is no translation and competition for me, but there are probably people who still want to see translation.
I'm fresh player btw. Always wanted to try this game, but it was too expensive for me. Recently, I got it on promotion. I think discovering this game and translating it at the same time will be great fun.

Yeah, I think that would be the solution. The problem is that there are, like, 10 font files, so it's a bit of work (it would need to be added everywhere). To check the characters you just need to set the text editor to iso first, then display as Windows-1252. I started tryinh with windows-1250 at first, but it looks like Ź would take additional work because there's nothing in that place in 1252.
ĄąĆćĘꣳŃńÓ󌜯żŹź is ¡±ÆæÊꣳÑñÓ󦶯¿¬¼ (ó doesn't seem to exist in many of the fonts, either)
I can't see any way to do this that would be simpler, unfortunately. I dunno, I guess I looked at the font files, but not getting too far for now.

Almost everything (i tried achievements, misc, tooltips and tutorial so far) works ok, but exclusively in events.xml if i put any non english character Slipstream can not compile my mod.
Code: Select all
Patching failed: java.io.IOException: Could not guess encoding for "spolszczenie.ftl:data/events.xml".
Failed to decode as UTF-8: java.nio.charset.MalformedInputException: Input length = 1
Failed to decode as windows-1252: java.nio.charset.UnmappableCharacterException: Input length = 1
EDIT: I probably found the reason. Event "CHARACTER_TEST" had characters prohibited in ISO 8859-2.

Have you been able to figure out the fonts? I've switched around some characters and it looks like the most relevant files that don't have them would be the 10 sized font and the 12 bold. Do you need the files I got so far or help with modifying/getting it to work, or are you way ahead of me?
