Freezing on loading screen

This is probably really old and been resolved many times but nonetheless.

Got the game and it ran flawlessly for a day or two until I got the brilliant idea to try save editing for purposes of dicking around, and it even worked after edits for a bit. what I think I did wrong was try to "clean out" the saves and dumped a few files thinking the game would automatically remake them and it didn't. obviously. But now it just sticks on the loading screen after startup with music playing in the background.

Other steam games work fine, and I've already tried verifying game cache, uninstalling and reinstalling, and just plain logging out and back in to steam. I think I slightly fucked up.

I've been having the same problem for months now. I've tried using a new computer, deleting all of the files and re-downloading them, I've had Steam validate my cache files, I made sure that I tried disabling the cloud sync and steam overlay, I can't find anything. I was, however, able to pirate a copy and opened it with Wine, and that worked, so I think the problem has to do with either running it on mac or Steam.
P.S. I'm running a 1920x1080 iMac, with the most recent updates for everything.
