Friendly defense drone takes down Crystal Vengeance shards

If you've activated a Defense drone and an enemy damages your Crystal ship causing Crystal vengeance to activate, the shard coming out of the ship will be neutralized by the Defense drone.
I hope this is a bug and not a feature (it's not cool to see your defense drone aiming at a shard instead of taking down an incoming missile
)
I'm not sure this has always been the case? I've been playing only on Hard lately, since FTL:AE was released (on Steam). I hope it's not a feature of Hard difficulty!
