If you unequip a System Repair Drone or an Anti-Personnel drone while either is deployed, the drone part is lost. This occurs regardless of whether or not the drone is powered.

The Drone Recovery Arm is able to recover drones deployed in space, so it would make sense that crew drones should also be recoverable, via the crew of the ship.

Are you sure they didn't get destroyed in the line of duty? Crew drones only use up parts when being deployed. If you power them down and power them up again, they don't use another set of drone parts.

Boarding Drones are another story, but that's boarding drones for you.

Absolutely. I'm talking about unequipping the schematic, not losing drones on power down.
If you have a crew drone deployed, and then swap it out for another type of drone, the crew drone will disappear and you lose the drone part.

Maybe crew drones are a bit more complicated than the drones used to attack enemy ships or to defend your ship and by taking it off your roster, you're rendering the parts useless.

But yeah it sounds like it should be possible. But if you want to feel easier lore-wise, let's go with that explanation. Other drones are just guns and engines and easily dismantled, crew drones are complicated, intricate works of art.
