Share Your Most Dramatic Near Death Experiences

Post by Lambchops »

I love moments when games get tense and you are hanging on to survive by the skin of your teeth. I had one of those moments recently (during a run that would eventually seem me getting to the final sector for the first time). I'd landed in an asteroid field and came across a rebel auto-scout. Often I find these fights quite damaging but this time I'd been fortunate enough to find a defence drone early on, which I smugly activated. Alas I was too quick to be smug. My first missile shot to take out the scout's weapons was a miss, and (not having upgraded shields at this point due to the cost of the drone system) the scout's first salvo damaged my drone. Desperate for protection I sent some crew to fix the drone. I can't remember whether it was the drone or the asteroid which did the damage but something damaged my engine so I sent my pilot off to fix that (the engines weren't charging anyway after all). My drones finally fixed I reactivated them and finally put paid to the enemy but not before they got off one final attach which hit my shield system and left me with only about 3 points left. I'm usually a stickler for repairing everything before I leave an area but shields be damned I was getting out of their. But of course I wasn't as I'd sent my pilot of to do that repair and in all the excitement I'd forgotten my FTL wasn't charging. Cue an anxious wait with asteroids pounding towards me, the FTL slowly charging and crew working to repair the shields. My drone performed its duty well but one asteroid managed to get through leaving me with a mere 1 hull strength. Finally the drive was charged and I could escape by a hair's breadth.

Of course the nerve jangling didn't end there. In my current state if I met an enemy I'd be sure to die. I desperately needed some luck with jumps. Nervously I jumped to the sector exit. All that waited for me was a mercanary. I left him along, unable to fight and needing the scrap for a hull repair. My first jump in the next sector only led me to a merchant offering a trade I didn't care about, unhelpful but at least not rebel, pirate or mantis! I looked at the map again and breathed a sigh of relief. A store! I patched up as much damage I could and went on my way with what was to become my strongest ship yet. But it oh so nearly died like the rest in a lonely asteroid field somewhere in sector 3.

That would be when I beat the game on easy. I had one hull point left when the boss launched it's weapons at me. However, my missiles hit first and the boss was destroyed, with it's weapons nanoseconds away from impact. Needless to say, I was really happy.

This is more actual death but still dramatic i was using the stealth ship for the first time, i managed to get to the flagship stage 3, clearing stage 1&2 easily using double board party's to quickly take out the enemy weapons and stealth drive to dodge.

Btw Spoilers if you haven't gotten to stage 3

At the time i had the i.Bomb Hull Smasher II and Burst Laser III, as you may know they have a reasonably long charge time and because of that it took while to take out the over over-shield. This was fine until the 4th or 5th time the shield returned up the lasers barrage kept coming at quicker intervals and eventually quicker than my stealth drive could recharge.

In the end i died with the flagship on 1 hp, words cannot describe how crappy it is when it happens.
