You kinda do need another crew of different species because Humans do not get any blue special options.

I do wonder, however, if you can use the same species more than once in a different (or repeat) event and have it count more than once, or is it just one species one time and you really do need 4 different species (other than human) on your crew AND you must be fortunate enough to have events tailored to those 4 species, once each.

The federation starts with human, rockmen, mantis and engi crew in the Type A. so you have enough to complete the achievement without finding additional. Although it does help to have more types.

No, you don't need to encounter one for each of 4 different races. You don't even need to encounter 4 unique events.
(I had 2 of the same engi event when I did it and the description doesn't say anything about unique or different)

Yeah I'm pretty sure I got it with all slug events, haha. The BEST events.

1) DUE TO A WEIRD QUIRK, I actually got this achievement WHILE IN THE FIFTH SECTOR. I, like you, was struggling to get the achievement, but apparently you can still get it in the fifth sector. Don't know about after though.

2) Actively seek out as many Distress Beacons as you can, as a number of them will involve Rock or Engi crewmembers.
