I am having an issue which is addressed in the readme_for_windows.txt but for some reason the fix for it is left out.

What is the fix for:

Error reading saved game. [...] Unexpected first byte...
You likely tried to open a profile while in the "Saved Game" tab.

As it is nice to see this is a known issue why the holy heck leave out how to fix this problem.

I have uninstalled the game and wiped out the My Documents folder for FTL saved games. Still I get this stupid error. What needs to be done to actually fix this?

That's not a bug in FTL itself. You're using the editor.

In the editor, there are two tabs at the top: "Profile" and "Saved Game".
Choose the appropriate one, then click "open".

You'll get that message if the opened file's contents are strange. This can happen if you try to edit a profile as a saved game, and vice versa. Or if FTL got an update that changed the way saved games are written (as happened last month with FTL 1.5.13).

Are you using the most recent version of the editor? (v24)
