If you ever find yourself up against a ship that can't kill you because it can't get past your shields, you can sit there and take hits forever and train your crew. Just make sure you don't kill your attacker. I walked away and ate a snack and came back to two gold crew memebers.

Your crewman manning the shield room should get maxed out in a few mins.
If you have ion weapons, or a laser that will not get past his shields, you can train up a crewman in weaponry the same way.

I'd be willing to bet that this works just as well for piloting and engine room, but the only time I got to do it was when I was hacked by pirates so those systems were offline.

I'm not sure if this is even worth "fixing", it is a fairly rare event.

It's not that rare if you get your shields a few ranks. You just need to find a ship without a missile weapon and you're gold.

It's pretty easily fixed by just putting a limit on XP gained per fight. I mean, at least I think that would be easy. I got no clue.
