Crew members and races discussion

Hi all,

In the most recent May trailer we got to see the new races that are being implemented. I like what I see.

Some feedback and questions:

[1] I like the emphasis on races designed for different play styles. I'd like to see the human race also have a bonus, or no pros/cons while the others do.

[2] I'd like to be able to start out with four crew members of a specific race as opposed to all humans. I think this is the direction you are going in, though, but I thought I'd mention it.

[3] Will crew members impact encounters? Will having a member of a specific race mean some encounters will have the option of diplomacy, or perhaps the NPC ship will turn hostile immediately?

[4] Are crew members just going to be defined by their race, or will they have their own stats?

Hey. We've given answers to most of these in interviews and videos, so I'll just go ahead and answer plainly. Just keep in mind all of this is subject to change. What I describe is just how it'll be when the beta starts (probably).

Right now humans are boring but our fallback is that they improve in skills faster. Classic "human" in games.

The races of your starting crew are currently dictated by the ship type. (i.e. Mantis player ship will have some, if not all mantis crew members)

Yes, but it's pretty limited right now.
[4] Are crew members just going to be defined by their race, or will they have their own stats?
All crew members of the same race start out with the same perks/faults. The only differentiation is in which skills they improve over time. We have a few ideas how to expand this system but it's quite simple right now.
