Fullscreen (Mac)

Postby NLewis » Fri Sep 14, 2012 8:47 pm

Hi there,

I am running Faster than light on the following specs :

Mac OSX 10.6.8
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
ATY,RadeonX1600 256MB VRAM
1680x1050 Display

I get very low fps, and when the game is set to fullscreen, the game turns completely white, but can still hear sounds.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Macbook Pro with almost the exact same specs and I'm having the same identical problem. Too slow in windowed mode (unplayably slow since all the actions and whatnot are also slowed down, not just the mouse) and in fullscreen (stretched or black bar) the screen is all white.

Works fine on my new iMac and on my Windows gaming PC.

I'm having the exact same issue. I too am on a Macbook Pro with similar specs and am experiencing the fullscreen whiteout and windowed play so slow it makes the game unplayable. Hoping for a solution.

Hi guys. Sorry about the problem. The Macbook Pro's with Radeon X1600's apparently lack a key functionality of OpenGL 2.0. I'm working on a solution and hope to be able to release an update that will allow it to run, both windowed and fullscreen, soon. I'll keep you updated.

In the meantime, I'm happy to offer refunds for the delay in functionality if you purchased the game directly from our website. You'd have to contact Steam / GOG.com if you bought it from them.

I am having the same problem with similar hardware. I have noticed a few things that confuse me a little bit.

In OS X, the game looks perfect in window mode. The graphics are sharp and all of the text is crisp as can be, but the game lags like crazy and is basically unplayable. In full screen, no matter what I do, the screen is white.

In my boot camp partition of Windows XP, the game doesn't lag at all but the sprites are jagged and the some of the text is illegible. In Windowed and Full screen mode the game runs at perfect speed but with the same graphical issues.

I just think it's a little weird that the differences between Windows and OS X are pretty much exact opposites, which leads me to believe that the game could function fully with my specs. If it can look crisp in one OS it should be able to look crisp in the other, and I would think the same goes for speed.

Thanks for looking into this as I really want to play this game and have been unable to do so, but would prefer to not get a refund if there is a possible fix, which it seems like there must be.

AMD has done a poor job supporting that video card for Windows 7 and for OS X apparently. They often drop support for cards as they become older, especially mobile ones. It's lacking a specific OpenGL feature that allows textures that are not a power of 2, which forces them to be resized and distorted on Windows. I have no explanation as to why that results in the behaviour you see in OS X, but other games (Dungeons of Dredmore for one) has shown that it is connected.

I'm currently putting in a fix so that feature is no longer needed and it should work perfectly on both systems.

Very cool and again, thanks for looking into this. For such a small development team, I'm very impressed with your involvement in the forums. Very reassuring.
