Looking at FLT characters I can see it making a real good Magna comic. With characters like Slugs, Mantis, Rocks and Robots it would fit great in anime art. Now I cannot make a comic for two reasons, 1 all the I.P. is property of Subset and cannot unless granted permission and 2 I don't have very good drawing skills. So this is just a sketch of what I think a good FTL series would be .
Pretty much following the story line with the main ship being the Kestrel (of course) and the crew running from the rebel fleet to get to the Besieged Federation Capital Sector. Exploring space making repairs recruiting crewmembers (and losing them) along the way with branching side plots and stories to connect all the races and pilotable ships together. So first of lets start with the cast of Permanente Crew or the ones that won't die (atleast not until Sector 8)
Stephen Campbell; Human Male: Flight Officer aboard the Kestral. Took the Pilot seat after the Captain was killed when the ship first escaped the rebel fleet. Now leads the mission to save the Federation
Alison; Human Female: A former Federation Cadet who along with the rest of the Crew Stole the Kestral from a Rebel controlled planet and aiding it with her mission to save the Federation.
Ma Fan; Engi: Crash landed on a planet with strange looking but intelligent lifeforms during the rebellion early days of purging aliens from "their space". After being reactivated by the Kestral's crew agrees to come aboard and help them with their mission.
Xia Tai Yi; Zoltan: His ship was taken over by pilots and the Kestral rescued him and return him to his ship removing the Pirates. He later joined the ships crew at a Zoltan Trade hub after he vouched for the Federation Humans.
"Boomfy"; Rock: A Rockman that joined a group of deserters outcast because they did not agreed to the dogma of their "Elders" After seeing the Kestral's sensor log and viewing the strange crystal pod he come aboard as they agree that the Kestral may lead them to the answers they seek about their origins.
KazaaakplethKilik; Mantis: A notoriously famous Mantis thief. After being rescued by the Kestral he agrees to help them in order to pay back a life debt while at the same time perusing a vendetta against the Pirates who disgraced him.
Slocknog; Slug: A "wasdering hero" seeking adventure that was marooned on a moon. Agreed to join the crew after they refused to "hire" him.
Bryan xNoLaNx Nolan; Crystal: Crystal Explorer who dared to leave their space against the laws of his kind. As a result his ship crashed and he was forced into a stasis pod to sustain his life. When rescued by the Crew of the Kestral he agreed to help them if they return him to his home. After he saw a rebel expedition fleet marauding through his home sector he agreed to help the Kestral and the Federation.

The Kestral: The main ship of the story and the one where the crew spends most of their time in. Its mission get the data to the federation capital sector. However several rebel fleets are dispatched to stop them.
The Red-Tail: In attempt to get past a rebel blockade guarding the Federation Capital sector in attempts to keep the Kestral away, the crew repainted their ship to match rebel colors. and a new ship name id number using much of the data they obtain from the rebel fleet registry when fighting the rebels.
The Torus: Ma Fan's ship, he uses this ship on his side story missions to help his people also while aiding the Engie ship.
The Vortex: Automated Engie Ship transporting General Turzil to speak with what remains of the remains of the Federation council.
The Osprey: Admiral Tully's flagship he uses to lead the last of the Federation Fleet in defense of their base.
The Nisos: The Former Federation Captain deserted with his ship shortly after his home and family was destroyed by the rebels. Blaming federation and himself he uses his ship as a transport/mercenary for hire with his slug business partner and his Zoltan crewman, the only remaining crew he had before he deserted.
The Adjudicator: Xi Tai Yi's ship, it was captured by pirates but when the Kestral recaptured it Xi Tai Yi uses it to help the Kestral.
The Noether: Xi Tai traded in his old cruiser for this new one. Ma Fan help made modifications using power from the shield generator to add Engie manufactured Ion cannons.
The Nesasio: Engie prototype stealth ship developed by the federation. The Kestral recaptured this ship to keep it out of engie hands. Using the cloaking device to hide it in a secure location away from the advancing rebel fleet.
The DA-SR 12: A second prototype stealth ship made by the Engie after the Nesasio was captured by the Rebels that features advanced beam weaponry from their allies the Zoltans. The Kestral uses this ship on a secret side mission to get to the Rebel occupied Engie Homeworlds to help Ma Fan rescue Engie V.I.P.s taken prisoner by the rebles.
The Bulwrak: Ship commandeered by a group of deserters "Boomfy" was a member of. Tested the strength of the crew of the Kestral by leading them close to a star. After their strength was proven they agreed to follow the Kestral in search of the "truths"
The Shivan: A secret rock blackship that was sent to silence the Bulwrak's heresy. Using the Kestral's teleporters "Boomfy" and his companions was able to board and commandeer it.
The Gila Monster: KazaaakplethKilik's flagship. After the crew of the Kestral saved him he pledge to use it to help the Kestral in their quest to save the Federation. A first for a Mantis.
The Basilisk: KazaaakplethKilik painted his flagship in the colors of the pirates in that region to get closer to the pirate captain that imprisoned him.
The Man of War: Hidden slug cruiser Slacknog was able to gain the coordinates after fighting a slug terrorist group.
The Stormwalker: A cruiser purchased by Slacknog in order to fill his dreams of becoming a famous adventurer
The Bravais: Crystal Cruiser Bryan xNoLaNx Nolan takes after his return to his home sector.
The Carnelian: After seeing what the Rebels were doing to his home sector The Bravais sensing the negative emotions of the Crystal crew transformed absorbing all it's weapons, and created a teleportation array to send the Crystal's away to the rebel ships in order to fulfill the Crystal's wraith they are now in such a need to satiate.

Okay here are some ideas for minor characters (aka the Redshirts) (Disclaimer might have some spelling errors on names)
Capitan Butters: Captain of the Kestral with his crew Stephen Cambel and Alison he takes the Kestral on a mission to save the Federation.
Admiral Tully: Recently promoted from Captain, he is commander of all remaining Federation forces which is not much that is left.
General Turzil: Engie sent as envoy to the Federation before the Rebellion. Now a General in need to fulfill the senior leadership of the Engie routines.
Charlie: Marooned human survivor rescued by the Kestral. Suffers from sanity issues do to long periods of isolation.
"Debbie": a Rock bride to be who refused the arranged marriage from her tribe. The Kestral agreed to offer her asylum.
Atrayu: Young Mantis rescued from a floating mantis lifepod. Friends with the famed mantis theif KazaaakplethKilik.
