I'm getting an error message when I run FTL. I uploaded a picture if it helps

I found the problem, I put the <modifyPursuit amount ="-100"/> in the wrong place. I tried running it again after fixing but no, still an error. Now I'm stumped.

It's been a while since i used this but i recall there being some errors when replacing files. Try to delete the files you are going to replace, save the database, then add your replacemets and save again.
Another explanation could be an error in your .xml file. They are very very very picky about spelling errors. If you don't mind posting some of your changes so we can take a look.
Finally, do not fret too much about crashing FTL while modding it, it's perfectly normal to cause even horrible crashes. The real problem is figuring out where you goofed. It's best to make few changes so you can backtrack easily. And keep a copy of vanilla data.dat and resources.dat handy

Thanks, I backed all the data up and managed to get it back to vanilla while I take a look at my xml.
For now I'll look at some other people's mods and see what they did.

this program is weird. It is hard to use and even If finally I know how to extract files then I edit one file and want to pack it all then I cant. When I struggle to add modified file to other files and save it then game crashes on start. To mod files and pack it with this program is just pain in the .... It just ruins data.dat file.

If you want to edit a file simply extract it. When you are ready to replace it, first delete the original file, save the database, then add the modified file into the exact spot where the original was. Save the database again and everything should work.
You can't expect it to work propery if you haven't learned how to use it yet. It's not without it's quirks but it's a very quick and easy to use tool. Just have to be carefull to maintain the file structure and add files where the game will look for them. Another reason for crashes is the edited content, maybe there's a typo or something.

Run the FTL-Dat.jar file. Its a Java executable. You need Java installed on your PC.

Not stupid. It isn't immediatley obvious. Looking for an .exe is normal.

A nice tool, easy to use and works mostly.
But for some reason when I add stuff, sometimes it will delete something else that is not in any way related to it.
