Mantis-Slug fighting event

I came across a mantis ship attacking a slug ship and the slugs asked for help in exchange for a reward. Of course after I took care of the mantis ship the slugs didn't give me anything. Then I have a choice to fight them or leave them alone. I chose to leave them alone because I had an away team on the mantis ship and I was afraid they would be left behind. Anyone know if that is what would happen, or would my away team have ended up back on my ship for the second fight?

Not seen this, but I would guess the new event would not update till you beamed your crew back like on enemy defeat. Unless the vessel explodes with them on that is... :/
