Took 2 hits, each doing 1 pt of hull damage. Yet i unlocked the achievement because i used only the arty beam to destroy the enemy. No explanation, but video evidence is here: www.hitbox.tv/video/133780 (1st hit is at 1:35).
I didn't save&quit at any point.
