Question: Playable ships

Post by chanman »

Hiya, I notice that the original Kestrel and the stealth ship, both with different room layouts have been seen in the preview videos.

Will you make some of the NPC ships available for use by the player as well? It looks like they have similar systems and would largely need to be re-orientated to face right instead of up on the main screen. Mind you, a ship lacking a medbay or egads, O2 would make for a short trip, but...

In the same vein, will fighting a Kestrel doppleganger be in the random encounters somewhere? :D

Hey,

Justin was saying that they are working on more playable ships due to the extra funding, I can't wait to see what they come up with :D

Oh, I know! But my question was specifically about the enemy ships, since they are already built with (most) of the same systems, and already have death animations, etc.

Plus, who thinks they can reach the end of even Sector 1 using the Auto-Bomber? :D

EDIT 2: Scratch all that, I just saw there's another thread about this...

*******

I'm seeing an interesting situation here:

During a battle, my ship becomes heavily damaged to the point of imminent destruction (maybe a power core failure or something like that), but my crew is more or less intact. I could use the transporters to beam everyone into the enemy ship, kill it's crew and capture their ship, so I can safely move away before my old ship explodes.

In the end, my crew survives and I still have a ship. It's good enough to get somewhere and get a new ship, or even keep the captured one, if that's what i want. Of course, the captured ship must be capable of supporting my crew, because if it's not, they'll be in a big trouble!

EDIT: of course, you wouldn't have to wait until your ship is almost destroyed; if you find a more interesting/powerful ship and you think you can capture it, go for it!

What do you think?

P.S: first post on this forum! :)

Capturing a ship, while probably difficult to implement at this point if it hasn't been in the pipeline, sounds freaking amazing! It'd be an awesome last ditch effort in a dire situation.

The transporter changes things. In the demo, by the time you killed the other ship's crew, it'd invariably be about to fall apart :D

I personally really like the idea of frantically trying to abandon ship if you're about to die and trying to take over an enemy ship. HOWEVER that will definitely not be available on release. Maybe it can be added in a free update.

Right now we are working on with the goal that each playable ship will be reasonably different from each other and require a slightly different starting strategy.
If you're having hull problems, I feel bad for you son. I've got 99 problems but a breach ain't one.

Setting aside ship captures, are you going to allow picking one of the NPC ships in lieu of the Kestrel from the get-go? It adds nicely to the lore as well to have the crew on the run in a stolen rebel ship or completely claptrap freighter. :D

That could be a lot of fun too :-)

Perhaps on first playthrough you could have a choice of the Kestrel and some basic other ships, then in battle, if you manage to kill an entire enemy (or not enemy.....) ship's crewmembers, that ship will be available for the player the next playthrough. That way, there's no complicated shifting between ships, a bit of unlockable content, and you could even add an achievement for each different ship available, once it has been used in a playthrough.
