Crew Experience???

What does reaching gold experience do for each skill? How can you train your crews skills? Does having non-gold experience have an effect?

Shooting from the hip here, but gold increases: how fast your shields recharge, dodge, dodge, and how fast your weapons charge (kinda). Skills are trained in battle by performing the associated action for the skill. Going by dodge chance, incremental skill gain does not effect output gain.

I'm thinking shields are trained by every hit shields take, piloting and engines are by dodging? So if you upgrade engines to higher levels you would train faster?
