It seems like missiles penetrate a long ship like the federation cruiser more easily than a smaller ship (like the torus).
Because the ship is more oval, there are times that the def drone is VERY far away from a particular side of the ship, and either doesn't get the shot off in time, or just plain doesn't shoot at all.
Is this intended?

It's a side effect of the design and we don't have a huge problem with it. Also just by the nature of the mechanics shots that are aimed at rooms on the edge of the ship will be a lot easier to shoot down than the interior. Perhaps it makes defense drones slightly less viable on the Osprey but it sure makes them nice on the Torus/Vortex. I personally like that they're 'imperfect' (although I understand it can be frustrating).
If you're having hull problems, I feel bad for you son. I've got 99 problems but a breach ain't one.

Does drones need to circle the ships horizontally? or could they "technically" be circling diagonally or something to lessen their circle radius so that it's the same on every ship? or maybe circle above the ship instead of around it?
Or are you that fond of the imperfection that even if a solution is found by the community you still don't want to change it?

As long as the enemy ships suffer from the same flaws I'm fine and even welcome it. It's nice to have a weakness in drone defense that can be exploited and I hope this is integrated into the combat design/balance.

Wow. This is interesting, and is one of the little things that gives us an extra advantage over the AI. Because we can exploit this by targeting enemy systems based on their position relative to the enemies drones but the enemy will still fire at random. Nice find.
Note: I am not in the beta and base most of my perception of the game come from a massive number of YouTube playthroughs and reading of patch notes/changes.
