Hey guys.
I figured you may find this interesting. The images for the two rebel ships were some of the first that I had made for the game. They were created before I had nailed down an art style and pipeline for creating new ships. This weekend we were revisiting the general look for the rebels and we decided it was time to update them to match the rest of the game. Let us know what you think!
The top image was the original and the bottom are the updated versions. I tried to keep the same general motifs of the copypasta wing design and the general shape.
Also, a new interview has gone online! Check it out on RPG Codex: http://www.rpgcodex.net/content.php?id=8133
It's pretty in-depth and contains a new screenshot that shows off another player ship, this time based on the Engi alien race.
If you're having hull problems, I feel bad for you son. I've got 99 problems but a breach ain't one.
At first glance they are nice but really any shape of a space ship is nice as long as its form follows function, so I wonder what the functions are that I am trying to achieve. Its the layout of the inside that would concern a end user such as myself but I am sure you are already aware of that.
For instance, looking at the second more compact ship, would the reason the rebels lost is because they were silly and didn't put their weapons on the outside edge of the hulls so they could have a greater arc of fire?
I am guessing the black protrusions are weapons systems, the area with the viewing portals are the pilot room, the elongated outer sections are the engines and the rest of the main inner hull cargo, living, and multipurpose rooms.
I like the new look for the Rebel ships, it gives them a look of their own rather than ships all looking similar.
Yes, I know that they will look similar overall, but if each race/group has similarities between the ships of their group it gives a more coherant look to them.
Basically, I think the new look is great!
(And I really like the new player-ship shown in the interview!)
I notice the ships are shaded, but the cockpit windshields are left flat. Have you considered shading them as well, or adding a bit of a reflection (really just a handful of light pixels) to help them look a bit more rounded?
